RO vs. UF vs. UV: Choosing the Right Purification Technology

RO, UF and UV solve different water-treatment problems. A strong product specification begins with source-water data and desired output, not with the longest possible list of filtration stages.

Reverse osmosis (RO)

RO uses a semi-permeable membrane to reduce dissolved salts and many other contaminants. It is a strong choice where total dissolved solids are high or consistent drinking-water quality is required. The system normally needs prefiltration, pressure management and wastewater planning.

Ultrafiltration (UF)

UF membranes remove suspended particles and many microorganisms while allowing dissolved minerals to pass. UF can work without an electric pump in suitable pressure conditions and is often selected for lower-TDS municipal water.

Ultraviolet (UV)

UV light inactivates microorganisms when water is sufficiently clear. It does not remove sediment, salts or chemical contaminants, so it should be paired with appropriate pretreatment. Lamp condition and exposure control are essential.

Build the treatment train

Sediment and carbon stages protect downstream technology and improve taste and odor. The final combination should reflect water analysis, local regulations, flow requirement, maintenance skill and operating cost.
